Amazon Games Partners With Former Forza Horizon Devs For Story-Focused Open-World Driving Game
Amazon Games has announced a publishing agreement with Maverick Games, a young studio founded in 2022 by former Forza Horizon developers. The developer’s first project will be an open-world racing game with a strong focus on storytelling.
Maverick Games is based in Warwick, UK, and was founded by six former executives from Playground Games. This includes studio head and creative director Mike Brown, former creative director of the Forza Horizon series, executive producer Tom Butcher, chief technical officer Matt Craven, and content director Gareth Harwood. The former audio director and art director of Playground, Fraser Stachan and Ben Penrose, are also on board.
In January 2023, the studio announced that its first title will be a „premium open-world game for consoles and PC.“ A press release includes an interview with Mike Brown, who gives some hints about what Maverick’s game will offer, which apparently places more emphasis on storytelling and character development than one would expect from a driving game.
„Many great driving games have great gameplay and great content,“ says Brown. „But to truly bridge the gap to become a game that people truly love, there has to be a human connection where you root for the characters and fall in love with them. I think that’s where our game will really stand out from the other titles in the genre. There’s nothing that stops this genre from having fantastic characters and fantastic stories – it just hasn’t really been explored yet.“
The press release also announces that Jamie Brittain, the co-creator of the award-winning British TV drama Skins, has been brought on as lead writer for the game. Brown explains that he believes in the power of good characters and cites Skins as an example of portraying interesting, flawed characters that have gained a cult-like following.
Maverick Games‘ project joins Amazon’s growing game portfolio, which includes the already existing titles Lost Ark and New World, as well as the upcoming Tomb Raider game from Crystal Dynamics and an MMO based on The Lord of the Rings from New World developer Amazon Games Orange County.
The partnership with Maverick Games shows that Amazon Games is looking to expand its presence in the market and cater to different genres. With an experienced team of former Forza Horizon developers and the creative input of Jamie Brittain, Maverick Games‘ open-world racing game could become a highly anticipated new project.
